UK ETA for Transit & Layovers
Do you need an ETA if you're just passing through the UK?
✗ ETA REQUIRED
If you pass through UK border control
- Leaving the airport
- Changing terminals (usually)
- Collecting checked baggage
- Overnight layover
✓ NO ETA NEEDED
If you stay airside
- Same terminal connection
- Don't exit secure area
- Bags checked through
- Quick connection flight
Heathrow Airport Specifics
At Heathrow, you can usually stay airside when connecting between:
- Terminal 2 ↔ Terminal 5: Airside connection available
- Same terminal: No immigration needed
However, if you connect between T2/T5 and T3/T4, you'll need to pass through immigration and will need an ETA.
⚠️ When in Doubt, Get an ETA
If you're unsure whether you'll need to pass through immigration, it's safer to apply for an ETA. It only costs £16 and is valid for 2 years.
Tips for Transit Passengers
- Book flights that arrive and depart from the same terminal
- Choose airlines in the same alliance for through-ticketing
- Allow at least 90 minutes for connections
- Check with your airline about baggage handling
